毫无疑问，警察和消防员都属于危险工种，可是，当农夫的风险却比这两种职业还要大。目前可得的美国劳工部最新统计数据显示，2009年，全职农夫和牧场工人的职业伤害死亡率是10万分之38.5，消防员是10万分之4.4，警察及巡警则是10万分之13.1。
劳工部经济学家吉姆赖斯（jim rice）说，这些数字似乎不合常理，因为你经常都能听到各种暴力事件，但却不太有机会听到有人被拖拉机碾死的事情。不过，对于那些从业人士来说，农夫却实实在在是一个危险的职业。

整体上看，政府雇员的伤病率要比私家雇员高。私家雇员的平均伤病率大约是万分之106，州政府雇员和地方政府雇员则分别是万分之180和万分之185。下面来看几个典型的数字：地方警员及巡警的伤病率是万分之676左右，运动员是万分之2,041，电脑程式师则只有万分之二。
办公室职员兴许算不上风险最大的工种，律师的伤病率是万分之二左右，私人财务顾问是万分之三，会计和审计员则在万分之七上下。不过，他们也有他们的问题。
按照美国疾病防控中心（centers for disease control and prevention）的说法，长期伏案工作的人可能会面临人工环境导致的肌肉及骨骼问题。
雅各斯说，背痛、颈痛和肩痛都可能会转化成慢性疾病。坐到电脑旁边之前，你应该做一做伸展运动，让自己的身体做好应付一天工作的准备。一天当中，你应该坚持时坐时起。
工作期间，你应该每隔20分钟就站起来伸展一次肢体，动一动胳膊、腿、手指和脚趾，连眼睛也别落下。
雅各斯说，一旦觉得不舒服，你就应该休息一下。长远来看，保持一个固定的姿势可不是好事情。
